Gates of the Rocky Mountains  -  MT.  On July 19, 1805, three days and some 100 river miles after leaving the Great Falls portage, the eight heavily-laden canoes entered the six-mile-long "Gates of the Rocky Mountains."  Here, the river flows through a narrow canyon with cliffs rising to 1200 feet.
